Science With Mrs. Ross – Caterpillars Days 2 & 4

For the last few weeks I’ve been learning how to use iMovie and making a couple of YouTube videos. I’ve just been playing around, in preparation for our move to online learning. Today is the first day we are able to require kids to do assignments or participate in activities, so I’m starting with some science observations.

One of the highlights of Springtime in Kindergarten is science because of all of our living creatures. We are starting with the observations and life cycle of caterpillars. We’ll be moving on to larger animals later! (Mr. Ross is a little fearful that I’m going to want to keep the baby chicks this year, but he has nothing to worry about. Farmer Perkins is going to take them this year.)

So, back to those caterpillars.

They have a layer of food at the bottom of their cup.

I put a penny up to the cup to see how long a caterpillar is, compared to a penny.

My ruler, at home, is clear and it makes it hard to take a picture. I grabbed the tape measure from the garage to measure.

Here is the observation form, inspired by Nellie Edge, for kids to print, draw their picture, and label. If you don’t have a printer at home, you can just use a blank piece of paper and make your own observation form. That’s what I did for my lesson on YouTube. Here’s the link, if you’d like to see the video.
