“I Had An Adventure!”

One of my kindergarten students came into class today, excited to tell me about her adventure over Memorial Day weekend.  She told me she went to the zoo and saw all sorts of animals.  The best part was that she got to “live” in a hotel for two whole days!

We live in the Seattle area, so when I pictured this little girl’s adventure (as she called it), I thought she may have traveled down to Portland or maybe San Diego.  Well, I was wrong.  Her adventure was right here in our own backyard.

She stayed at a hotel Downtown Seattle and experienced the city like a tourist, including a trip to Woodland Park Zoo.  My sister-in-law’s family does the same thing at Christmas time.  What a wonderful experience to give your family!  It’s an adventure and you don’t even have to drive very far to get there.

I’m guessing there will be a book written about the adventure too.  Even in kindergarten, I teach my kids to live like writers.  I have never considered myself to be a writer. (Actually, the thought of modeling a writing lesson for my students used to petrify me.)   I have learned a few things, from two of my favorite authors about the teaching of writing.  The best advice I can give is to live and think like a writer, to see each moment as a story in the making, and capture those important memories.  We all have stories inside of us.  Some of us just choose to write them down.
What will your kids’ adventures be this summer?  How will they capture their memories?
