Cook-A-Doodle-Do

My 6 year old loves to work in the kitchen. She loves to cook, bake, wash fruit, cut veggies, or anything else that means she can be right next to mom in the kitchen.

Last week, my daughter’s kindergarten teacher sent home a book bag for us to use. She sends these bags about once a week. They usually contain a book, a stuffed animal, and a fun activity to do together. Being a kindergarten teacher myself, I love to “steal” these ideas to use in my own classroom. My daughter’s teacher is fabulous and always eager to share her ideas with me!

The book bag we had this week contained the story Cook-A-Doodle-Do. The book is a great extension to the Little Red Hen.

At the back of the book, there is a recipe for Great Grandma’s Strawberry Shortcake. (Great Grandma is the Little Red Hen.) So, of course, my daughter was begging to make the recipe.  Well, it just so happened that we were having my mother in law over for a belated Mother’s Day celebration.  I suggested that we make the strawberry shortcake recipe for dessert.  My daughter was thrilled.

It was a very simple recipe and REALLY yummy. It was perfect for a 6 year old to do all by herself.  I can’t even begin to tell you how proud she was as we served her dessert to the family.  Cooking with your kids is a great experience.  It provides confidence in the kitchen, builds self-esteem, requires reading and measurement, and best of all… it’s fun!  Don’t get me wrong, it’s not always quick and easy, and I’ll admit there is a bit more mess to clean up.  On the other hand, I’d gladly clean up a little extra flour so my kids can have these important experiences.

Happy baking!

Check out these linky parties.
